Texas’ Next Generation of App Entrepreneurs and Coders are getting started at United South High School

Laredo Tx – To kick off their new STEAM course, Jaime DeLeon’s students met with some of the development team behind the new Web and Mobile Application Course. Mr. DeLeon arranged the meeting to give his students the opportunity to hear what it is like to be JavaScript App coders, get a peek at the apps they would be creating, and to ask questions about the Industry Certification they could earn.

Daniel and I demonstrated some of web and mobile apps the USHS students will be creating this semester. Showed them how to use the cloud based developer tools and we talked about some of the NOOB pitfalls that are easy for first-time developers to fall into. The students had the chance to ask questions and learn, first hand, about the excitement of being part of this high-demand and highly creative STEAM career.USHSbs

During the webinar, the students also learned about an international competition they may submit their apps to at the end of the semester in the hopes of bringing honors home to Union South.

Before we ended the student meeting Mr. DeLeon gave this shout out “I am proud of my students and so very grateful to our administration for making all of this possible at USHS.”  Jaime is one of our favorite teachers we work with. Always friendly, gracious and does a great job inspiring his students.

This is a first Web and Mobile Application with JS class in the region.

Jaime DeLeon is not new to CTeLearning.com’s courses. For a number of years he has been using CTeL’s courses as part of USHS STEAM and CTE initiative. He got started using our Coding and 3D Video Game Design course as part of a TEA Texas Approved Innovative Course in Video Game Design. Now Jaime has added this new course to give his students the opportunity to learn JavaScript coding and earn industry credentials.  His class is on track to have some of the first industry credentialed students for Web and Mobile Application Design in Texas. CTE STEM Mobile Application Coding UC a-g approved

Not only are his students learning how to use JavaScript, but they are learning how to take that knowledge and turn it into Web and Mobile Apps. The students are also learning how to take the apps and potentially sell on the web or in an app store. These new tech creators will also have the chance to sit for an optional industry certification at the end of the course. So, imagine the students’ excitement at not only knowing how to create a top selling app, but to also market their app, build a college and career-ready portfolio and a have a set of industry credentials to back it all up.

Department of Labor stats tell us that there will be 1 million unfilled Computer Science jobs in the U.S. in 2020. Jaime wants to give his students every chance to try out the Computer Science STEAM career field.

Congrats to Mr. DeLeon and all his United South HS students for getting started in this exciting course.

Have fun – Steve
